Giresun Nettle is a perennial herbaceous plant that grows in Giresun province and whose Latin species name is Urtica diocia L. Its leaves are dark green in color, stalked, with toothed edges and burning hairs. Its flowers are small green in color. The flowers emerge collectively like tassels from the axils of the terminal leaves and hang in bunches. Giresun Nettle blooms between May and September. Its fruit is dry and has a single seed. Its leaves are opposite, lance-shaped, pointed, roughly serrated and 2-4 cm long. The feather structure of Giresun Nettle is rod-like. Giresun Nettle, which is also cultivated, is used in the preparation of various dishes and fiber production. In the production of Giresun Nettle, seeds obtained from the previous period are used. The pH level of the soil at the geographical border is 5-7, the average annual rainfall is 1500 mm and the humidity rate is 80% on average, making Giresun Nettle rich in myricetin and naringin. Some features of Giresun Nettle are given below.
Production Method:
Soil preparation and seed planting
In the area where Giresun Nettle is grown, 2 tons of burnt farm manure and 100 kg of lime are applied to the surface. After cultivating the soil at a depth of 20-30 cm in March-April, when the soil moisture is suitable, the clods formed in the soil are broken by raking and a smooth soil surface is created. Seed planting time is May. Seeds obtained from the previous period are sown at a rate of 500 g per decare, and soil is spread on it and pressed with a roller. Sowing depth should be 1-1.5 cm. Nettle seeds germinate in 10-15 days at a temperature of about 20℃.
Irrigation
Since Giresun province is extremely rainy and humid, there is no need for irrigation. After planting the seeds, they are watered once a week if the season is dry.
Harvest
Harvest varies according to production purpose. Vegetable Harvest: Giresun Nettle reaches the appropriate maturity for vegetable harvest 45-60 days after planting. In the leafy period before flowering, the leaves in the first three nodes from the top leaf to the bottom are harvested by hand or with scissors and offered for sale fresh in plastic packages. The products obtained from this harvest are stored in a dry and cool environment.
Seed Harvest: The matured seeds are harvested by hand scraping. It is placed in plastic packaging and offered for sale.
Fiber Harvest: In cultivation for fiber production, the harvest is carried out after the 2nd year after planting. The fibers obtained from the first year are thin and not durable, and since the plant is branched, the fiber quality is very low. High-yield fiber harvest occurs in the 4th year. The total harvest period is up to the 10th year after planting. Harvesting is done by hand or machine by plucking it from the soil surface level. The entire plant is harvested and used in fiber production. Plants harvested as fiber are stored in a cool, dry environment until processed for fiber extraction.
