Hand-woven carpets and rugs take the most important place in handicrafts in Malatya's Akçadağ district, and Akçadağ Carpet has been known not only in Malatya but also in the surrounding provinces for a long time. In the yearbooks of the Ottoman State for Akçadağ carpets, "Kürne (it is a neighborhood within Akçadağ, its new name is Küçükkürne), many carpets, rugs, prayer rugs, upholstery and curtains are woven by the Kürecik tribes and women in the Hasan Çelebi township. Since it is wanted and desired from all sides, and because it is thin and strong, it exports a hundred thousand kuruş annually.” is called. In the yearbook of Mamure tül Aziz, dated 1310 Hijri (1892), it is written as follows: “The carpets and kilims woven in the accident are very elegant and beautiful. It is astonishing that these acceptable rugs and carpets have evolved in such remote areas.” The dominant color in Akçadağ Carpets is red, and black or dark blue is frequently used together with red. To obtain the basic colors, the natural colors of the wools are used to dye the yarns. When laying the floor of a room, two or three thin and long carpets are preferred depending on the size of the room. If these carpets are in two pieces, they are in the same patterns; If there are three pieces, the carpet that will come out with the same patterns on the edges is woven in thinner and different patterns. Each of these parts is called a "wing". Akçadağ Carpet; They are carpets with 27.32 and 32.36 degrees knots, with around 670 to 700 knots in one square decimeter (dm2), made with Gördes knot and with a pile height of 4-5 cm.

Production Method: The wool to be used in carpet making is combed after drying. The simplest comb consists of a row of nails driven into a flat tree. The combing process ensures that the fibers become parallel. This is a process to prepare the wool for spinning. After combing, the wool is first roving by hand. Then it is spun with kirman or spindle. Spinning varies according to the way the wool will be used. Wool used in Akçadağ Carpet; less twisted, thin and double layered. The local people use the threads they produce from their own wool and dyed with root dyes. The warp, which forms the skeleton of the carpets, consists of woolen threads.

Weaving technique: Gördes knot is used in Akçadağ Carpets. Gordes Knot; Also known as Turkish Knot or Double Knot. Gördes node is symmetrical. Knots are passed between two independent warps and tied to these two warps.

Production, Processing and Other Processes Required Within the Geographical Boundary: Akçadağ Carpets are carpets identified with the region, produced for centuries and known to the region. The motifs used in the product reflect the cultural accumulation in the region, and the choice of motif, composition and color requires mastery. The product is connected to the region with the bond of human factors and fame, and the supply of wool, dyeing and weaving of the carpet should be carried out within the geographical boundaries.

Carpet Condition Terms:

Extraordinary: It is the term used for rugs and carpets that have the characteristic of having a very difficult or special production technique, aging correctly, or having a high level of artistic value, as well as having no defects in the product. The value of new or second hand rugs and carpets, which are in outstanding condition, continues to increase over the years.

Antiques: Although the product is over 80 years old, it has a design, paint technique and origin features that can preserve its artistic value. Antique products can tear, wear, and cause pain. Most antique products have a more valuable aura as they age due to the natural paint and construction technique. For this reason, antique expert values are formed according to the current state of the antique products, the way they are worn, their production techniques and the region.

Excellent: Rugs and rugs in excellent condition are flawless, clean, with the potential to increase in value, bearing the characteristics of the region, and produced correctly. They can be antiques when used properly.

Good: These are carpets and rugs that have average defects in carpets and rugs and are likely to increase in value.

Medium: These are carpets and rugs suitable for daily use, which may have minor damage, do not have a high degree of motif difficulty, and are average in terms of yarn and paint material used.

Mediocre: Rugs and rugs with low pattern difficulty, relatively easy to manufacture, lost quality in various aspects (torn stains, paint mixing, etc.).

Hand-made carpets and rugs do not have bad or very bad classes. All the carpets and rugs produced are a great hand labor. However, there are carpets and rugs that cannot create their value within the bounds of possibility. All carpets and rugs produced are very special works of art that require great labor and production time. For this reason, there is no carpet or rug with low hand made value. There are only carpets and rugs whose experimental value is relatively lower than their square meter. Our recommendation is to use handmade carpets and rugs in your home, office, and in all areas of your life. One square meter rug or carpet is made in 1-2 months on average. Natural rugs and carpets organize the energy of your life, add value to life, improve your artistic approach, and are beneficial to nature. It is completely a part of nature, sustainable and harmless.
