Every June, the lush forests of Şile come to life with the blooming of chestnut trees. These flowers feed the forest and Şile's deep-rooted beekeeping tradition. Şile Chestnut Honey is a flavor with a deep-rooted tradition. For centuries, people living in these lands have been continuing a craft passed down from generation to generation by beekeeping in 11-12 hectares of forests filled with large chestnut trees. Şile Chestnut Honey is a flavor heritage born from this deep-rooted tradition.
Approximately 300 families are engaged in beekeeping in the Şile region. They produce chestnut honey, which is important in terms of their income and also represents the traditions and unity of their society. Half of these families are professional beekeepers with over 30 hives.
Characteristics of Şile Chestnut Honey: Şile Chestnut Honey is a versatile honey that can be used both for medical purposes and as a table. It has a dark brown color, sharp and slightly bitter taste. This honey, which has a unique taste and smell of chestnuts, is known for its antiseptic properties. And like all dark-colored honeys, it is protective against cancer because it is an antioxidant. Honey bees collect both pollen, nectar and secretion from chestnuts. Studies have found that it is effective against B. Hemolytic streptococci with its antibiotic properties.
Since chestnut honey produced in the Şile region contains a high amount of chestnut pollen and the Rhododendron plant blooms at a different time than chestnuts, it has a different composition and aroma than other chestnut honeys on the Black Sea coast.
